two disc drives and only one works

a friend and i have been trying to get both disc drives to work.currently
only one drive functions. both show them as running and functioning properly
and the drivers as being current.his system did not let either drive work but
upon installing service pac 3 the burnable cd drive started to
function.before ser pac 3 neither would work.the drive not working does not
play music or show pictures, and you cannot record off of it to burn music to
the other drive. both of us have limited cpu skills and i have tried all i
know.we have tried new updates and they both come back as current and
runninfg properly.as far as the cpu knows both drives are fine but only one
works.upon trying to open it it will try to open to a point and then doesn't
open.how do you check the suspected drive even when the cpu thinks it's good?
i have no sequence to trouble shoot this other than what i have tried.the cd
works in the one drive and not the other. please help if you can and be very
specific because we are novices. mike

Try power off pc,move either or a drive to another IDE connection (set jumper
pins as needed,use the "master/slave" settings),once thru,start pc.XP will
reinstall moved or changed drive on restart...
