Machine 1 is from out of business OEM. Windows XP Pro
installed, never got software. (can verify payment for XP
pro on invoice)

Machine 2 has Full Retail XP Pro Installed.

Can I use Machines 2 software to reinstall XP pro on
Machine 1?

NO!!! OEM and Retail are not the same. OEM CD keys do not work with
Retail CD and vice-versa,

Y.

no....you should buy a second copy.
only one copy can be updated with monthly updates.

"Trustworthy Computing" is only another example of an Oxymoron!
"Produkt-Aktivierung macht frei!"

This is only half true...

We regularly use a retail XP CD to re-install the OS on an OEM machine
using the OEM product ID that came with the machine. It does work and
activates with no problem. In fact this has been a recommended pratice
in many tech forums to get a clean, non-OEM-butchered install of Windows.

However, it does not work vice-versa; you cannot use an OEM CD and a
retail product ID code. I've tried - you'll get an invalid product ID error.

Steve

Yes you can as long as you use the OEM product ID code for machine1.

You cannot use the same code on two machines, one will not activate.

Steve

Steve,

Thanks, I'll try that.

Steve,

Thanks - The reason I just bought the full retail version
was to:

1 - Upgrade machine # 2 from Windows ME,

and

2 - Do a clean reinstall of machine # 1 OEM XP.

Sounds like I can do this.

Thanks again,

Doug

You must have misread the post - they already have two licenses, one is
OEM the other retail.

What BS! I'd want to be anonymous too if I ever said something so
ignorant.

can you physically ,yes probably,
will it work? probably not.
will you have activation nightmare? yes definitely.

will it work? probably not.

It WILL if done correctly; use the OEM product ID for the OEM machine
install and use the retail product ID for the other.
will you have activation nightmare? yes definitely.

Not if he does it correctly and uses the correct ID for the each machine.
