Twin Personal Folders

J

Jay

In the Folders List in Outlook 2003, I have a twin Personal Folders showing.
The second is ide ntical with the first (including all sub-folders) and
anything I do in Outlook is mirrored in both!

I checked everything I could think of in Data Files and Options, but cannot
set this right. There is only one Personal Folders listed in Data Files
anyway!

It does not hamper operations at all but is just a bit disconcerting.

This suddenly came up from a few days ago - earlier I could see only one
Personal Folders with all sub-folders listed under it.

Any insight would be much appreciated.

Regards and thanks.

Can you right click on the root of one of the versions of your folders and
choose "Close"?

some how you got a ghost - the easiest way to fix it is to make a new
profile.

Thanks for the response - I checked it out and the Close Personal Folders
option is greyed out!

Sounds like someone made a copy of a shortcut of the original... You could
try creating a new email profile and see if it goes away.

Thanks for the profile tip - I checked this out and will try it out later
this afternoon.

Interestingly, in the meantime:

I extracted the outlook.pst file from a week-old Ghost image (that I know
was from before this problem appeared) and simply substituted it for the
existing outlook.pst file in the appropriate folder (after making a back-up
copy first, of course).

And, lo and behold, Outlook started off with just one Personal Folders but
this almost immediately reverted back to the glost twin after catching up on
downloaded messages!

This has me stumped! But I think I might even let it go (if no immediate fix
works) as it does not seem to affect Outlook operations or performance in
any manner whatsoever.

Regards.

Thanks for the tipe - I never considered that before.

I just opened the shortcut list and there are none showing!

Later today, when I have some free time, I shall experiment with the profile
aspect. Sound like that might be able to address this issue.

that is one scenario that will cause it - rather than replacing an existing
pst, open the extracted one using file, open or control panel, mail then set
it as default and remove the other.

Just out of curiosity what is the size of the .pst file? I know when you
reach the 2 gig limit funny things start to happen...

Thanks for all the suggestions - here is what I did taking into account all
the useful info:

1. In Documents and Settings/Administrator/Local Settings/Application
Data/Microsoft/Microsoft: Moved Outlook.pst file to secondary storage
drive. Also created Blocked and Safe Sender's lists in junk Mail settings
and saved in storage drive.

2. In Control Panel/Mai/Show Profiles: Deleted existing profile and created
new profile.

3. Opened Outlook and recreated Mail Account.

4. Imported messages from original Outlook.pst file.

5. Downloaded latest messages.

6. Re-imported Blocked and Safe Sender's Lists.

Things are absolutely back to normal!

Thanks very much indeed for the very useful tips and pertinent info! I would
never have been able to do it without the help I received here.

Regards. Everybody be blessed.

The size of the pst file is 56MB. I have the habit of archiving all Outlook
and OutlookExpress message folders and files every two months or so to keep
down the sizes! And I do a weekly archiving of all documents as well as
create a Ghost image of my system drive.

Please check the "Update...." posting in this thread to see how the issue
was resolved!

Regards.
