I know by downloading tweakui you can get rid of the short cut arrows, but is
ther anyway of editing the reg to get rid of them

Navigate to the following in the Registry:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile]

then in the right hand pane set "IsShortcut"=-
