TweakUI vs TweakVI

TweakUi basic is a valuable utility.
More elegant than TweakUI - but
some of the functions of TweakUI
are not available in TweakVI Basic.
Although the latter is far more complete.

My opinion is both should be installed.

Both are extremely good at doing what they were designed for; however you
cannot install both on the same system. TweakUI is for Windows XP and will
not install on Windows Vista. TweakVI, on the other hand, is only suitable
for Vista.

Snip ....................

TweakUI 1.33 installed OK on my Vista. Whether it works properly is
something else - I am about to find out!!

TweakVi is a third-party tool designed for use in Vista.

TweakUi is an XP powertoy designed by Microsoft and should not be used in a
Vista system.

Is there a technical reason why it should not be used with Vista? It
instals OK

TweakUI 1.33 installed OK on my Vista. Whether it works properly is
something else - I am about to find out!!

I tried it, and it mucked up my desktop icons, by apparently taking
one icon at random from the desktop and overlaying it in the bottom
left corner of every icon on the desktop, where the shortcut arrow
icon would usually be! They stayed that way even after I uninstalled
it, and I had to edit the registry to return the desktop to normal.

I used the one at majorgeeks.com that cqui3 posted a link for in
message <[email protected]>.

Good luck, hope it works better for you.

It did work better for me. And I have been using it for months now -
perhaps over a year. I wonder if your problem really came from
TwekUI.
At the time I recommended it in a Microsoft newsgroup several users
found it worked well.

It would not work for me on a Dell Vostro 220 with Windows Vista Basic
preinstalled. But then I am suspicious of Dell pre-installations.

Now that I think about it, I did use something to eliminate the
shortcut arrows from my desktop icons when I first got my pc, so maybe
that caused my problem with TweakUI. I can't remember what it was,
but it didn't involve any manual registry edits.

It can be done with a small *.reg file or manually editing the registry.
If TweakUi works well on your computer you should be able
to restore the arrow, or restore/or suppress «shortcut» from the
name of new shortcuts. That is after you reboot.
