Tweakui ver 2.10 Problem. Can anyone help????

P

Paul Woodsford

I have a 2 PC LAN using XP on both PC's.
In My Network Places both PC's were shown with the respective shared HD's
etc and they could be grouped by Computer.
I installed the new version of XPTweakui and since then the groupings in My
Network Places have changed on each PC.
On PC1 in MY Network Places all the shared drives etc: from PC2 are
correctly grouped under PC2 whereas all the drives etc: from PC1 are grouped
under "Unknown", the opposite occurs on PC2.
I believe it is something to do with the following in Tweakui:- My
Computer / Drive Letters

Can anyone help sort this out.?
The Network works OK.

The Network works OK.

There IS a type of known problem with Tweakui 2.10 (Latest)
and that very area but it really has only something to do with
where the drive letters show up and where the LABELS for the
drives are.

Like : (C) Local Drive OR Local Drive (C)

The note is this:

---------------------------------------------------------
Drive Letter Section Screw up:

Show all drive letters before the label is in fact Show
network drive letters before the label, and show local drive
letters after the label

Show network drive letters before the label, and show local
drive letters after the label is in fact Never show drive
letters

Never show drive letters is in fact Show all drive letters
before the label

--------------------------------------------------------

FOR EXAMPLE: I have "NEVER SHOW DRIVE LETTERS" and what do I
have? I have the drive letters BEFORE any label ON BOTH Local
AND Network drives - I love it!! :)

Now under EXPLORER in Tweakui there IS a check box that says;
"Show View Workgroups" - but I don't think that is it either.

I hope this helps but I don't think it will.

You are correct Silverman. I noted you're comments and still have the same
problem

Hmmm ... I have exactly the same display ... it now shows 'Unknown' for the
Host computer group. I, also, have just installed the latest TweakUI so it
looks like your suspicions might be correct.

Haven't come up with a solution yet, but I'm still poking around.

I have found that if you re-do the Share for each Drive or Folder they are
re-detected correctly but after they have been opened they are re-grouped
under "Unknown".

Let me know if you have any luck, I'll do likewise.

FredP

Nice 'catch' on the Share ... I added Administrators with Full Control and
thought that might do it ... until I then opened the Drive, but I now get
the same results as you stated.

I'll keep 'poking around' tomorrow ... and perhaps someone else might have a
solution.

OK ... Got it! (I hope)

1. Selected My Network Places from the desktop.
2. Deleted all the icons showing in 'Unknown'. This left only the Client
icons which were always correctly grouped by computer name.
3. Selected 'Folders' from the icon bar which displayed all folders in the
left pane.
4. Expanded My Network Places, Entire Network, Microsoft Windows Network,
Mshome (my workgroup name).
5. Selected and Dragged and dropped the Host computer icon (displayed under
Mshome) into the right hand pane for My Network Places.
6. It now displays both the host and client computer icons and names and
they are grouped properly according to computer name.

So far it's holding ...

Hi FredP,
Followed you're instructions. Everything seemed to work OK, but checked back
on the Network Folder after an Hour and all the Host PC shared drives etc:
once againe were grouped under "Unknown".

FredP

Hmmm ... mine are still holding properly. In My Network Places, I have both
Host and Client computer icons showing in my working XP (similar to 'View
workgroup computer'), which is my preferred display, and in my cloned XP on
HD-1(dual boot) I dragged and dropped the normally displayed default icons
(Shared Docs, etc.) for both computers and they all seem to be working fine
now.

Do you still have the Host drives shared manually? You previously indicated
that you re-did the shares. I did also, but then went back after the 'drag
and drops' and selected 'Do not share'. Got the warning about
'Administrative shares' and rebooted and it returned to the default display
with 'Share name: C$' and 'Comment: Default share'.

oh ... and I had to delete the 'unknowns' and do the 'drag and drop' for
each user, including Administrator and Guest.

Hi FredP,
Yes you're method works with the Host Computer Icon, and it hasn't changed.
However, if I go Network Places/Host Computer and transfer one of the
shortcuts back to Network Places it is correctly grouped until I open it /
close it /close Network Places and then reopen it. The transfered shortcut
is now grouped under Unknown.

Hi, Paul ...

Yes, I'm now getting the same results on my XP 'clone' with
open/close/reopen of the shortcut icons and, furthermore, if I click on a
sub-folder of 'SharedDocs' I get an error with the "Windows Explorer has
encountered a problem and needs to shut down. We're sorry ..." window.

However, in my case, I'm perfectly satisfied with just the Host and Client
icons in My Network Places. It gives me 'single click' display to not only
the folders but of the printers, fax, scanner, scheduled tasks, and shared
docs. So I will stay with that ...

I'm a bit surprised no one else has jumped in on this thread ... we can't be
the only ones seeing this problem.

Anyway, good luck ... Fred

Hi FredP,
well I'm sorry you are having the same problem( well in a way as I am glad
it is not just my system).
Maybe no one else has a LAN and has installed the new version.
I see what you mean about having just the Host Icon, it is useful. Maybe the
next version of Tweakui will solve it.
I do know that unibstalling and going back to the old version does not alter
this strange behaviour.
