Tweak UI Autologon..

J

JD

I'mthe only user but when XP boots I have to select my name to start XP.

I used Tweak UI, Logon, Autologon and set a Password but when XP starts
it says it can't log me on and I go back to where I have to select my name.

Is the problem that in Control Panel, Users, I do not have a Password
set there?

This is easier.

Do not use control userpasswords2 to create accounts if you are using XP
Home!!!

[[You can also use turn on automatic logon without editing the registry in
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition and in Microsoft Windows XP Professional
on a computer that is not joined to a domain. To do this, follow these
steps:

1. Click Start and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type control userpasswords2 and then click OK.

Note When users try to display help information in the User Accounts window
in Windows XP Home Edition, the help information is not displayed.
Additionally, users receive the following error message:

Cannot find the Drive:\Windows\System32\users.hlp Help file. Check to see
that the file exists on your hard disk drive. If it does not exist, you must
reinstall it.

3. Clear the "Users must enter a user name and password to use this
computer" check box, and then click Apply.
4. In the Automatically Log On window, type the password in the Password
box, and then retype the password in the Confirm Password box.
5. Click OK to close the Automatically Log On window, and then click OK to
close the User Accounts window. ]]

Info about what and how TweakUI does this.

TweakUI\Autologon
This allows setting the username and password so that the system
automatically logs in at startup. The user need not select his user name and
type the password every time. To suppress autologon, hold the shift key when
the system is starting.

TweakUI\Autologon
The last useful category in Tweak UI is Autologon, and it enables you to
automatically log on to Windows XP without providing your name, domain, or
password. Table 5-27 describes the values you must set to log on to the
computer automatically. Name is the user name, and Domain is the domain
name. To enable Autologon, you must set the REG_SZ value AutoAdminLogon to
1. Last, set the value REG_SZ value DefaultPassword in the subkey Winlogon
to the password you want to use to automatically log on to the computer. You
don't see this value in Tweak UI because it stores the password differently.

Table 5-27, sort of.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Log on automatically at system startup
Value Name: AutoAdminLogon
Data Type: REG_SZ
Value Data: 0 or 1
0 = Disables automatic logon.
1 = Enables automatic logon.

Automatic logon requires that the DefaultDomainName and DefaultUserName
entries appear in the registry with valid values.

User name
Value Name: DefaultUserName
Data Type: REG_SZ

Domain

I'm sorry but that's all too confusing to me. I think I'm better off
just clicking on my name. As it stands now, I don't have a user
password. Maybe once I'm actually using XP we can try this again.

Thanks for trying to help!

JD,

You may have typed an incorrect username or password in TweakUI. Simply re-do the steps correctly this time. It works very well!

Back to my original question: When I look at Users in Control Panel,
there is no password set for my account. Is that why the Tweak UI
Autologon fails?

Nope. But did you leave the password field blank, in TweakUI?

When I leave the password field blank in Tweak UI it doesn't stick. If I
recall, I have to reboot and it works once but on a cold boot I'm back
to clicking on my name to log in. I was told I need to have a password
in order to use Tweak UI's autologon feature.

Go to Start then Run and copy or type in the following. control userpasswords2 notice the space between control and usepassword. When the dialogue box opens then take out the checkmark from Users must enter etc etc . Hit Apply and reboot. Post back with result.

When I do that, I'm presented with three users.
1.Administrator as Administrators
2.ASP.NET as Users
3.My Name as Administrators

I'm not used to signing onto my computer. I didn't have to do that with
Windows 98SE.

If I do what you want me to do, is the computer going to start as My
Name, like it does now when I select My Name when the comuter starts?

Hi Ramesh,

That's why the first line was: This is easier.

Several years ago I messed up big time with my new install of XP. I used
TweakUI\Autologon and somehow used the wrong user. I couldn't find all
kinds of things so I reinstalled XP. At some time later it occurred to me
that I may have logging on as the wrong user.

Hey, I found my notes. This ought to be good for a laugh! Here is a
snipped version.

Some time in February 2004.
-----------

I had Windows XP Home Edition.

I was using Steven Burn's IDSuite to find and remove Index.dat files. I was
using an older version and managed to delete Documents and Settings twice.
Hey, it only took me two times to figure out what I'd done. I would start
in Safe Mode with the Command Prompt and run a modified version of the
run.bat that IDSuite had created. Apparently not modified good enough.
After the first time I did a Repair Install. After the second time I
restored things from my backup CD. Well I didn't have all the Users, but me
and the Administrator where getting along fine.

I reformatted my HD from FAT32 to NTFS and did a clean install of Windows XP
Pro Edition. I am set up to go right to the Desktop, no password. I had
the Administrator Account shown on the Welcome screen. I have TweakUI. The
second day I booted up my machine; the Desktop was gone. SOB! Just the
Recycle Bin, nothing else. Start Menu, toast. I just knew that I had
dumped Documents and Settings again. So I re-installed. I did Windows
Updates, reloaded things, made adjustments, etc. I seem to get a lot of
exercise jumping to conclusions.

I started my machine the next day. Desktop trashed. Start Menu trashed.
!$@#%@#%. For some reason I don't remember I happened to open the Task
Manager. What User Name was listed? Administrator. Huh?? After some
checking I discovered that in TweakUI the Administrator and not Wesley was
listed to Logon. I removed the Administrator from the Welcome screen, which
I think I've seen maybe six times. I now make sure that Start Menu stuff
gets loaded to All Users.
-----------

That was the last time that I reinstalled XP.

From systeminfo.exe...
Original Install Date: 18-Feb-04, 9:34:24 AM

ROTFL I have to learn everything the hard way.

I hope you or someone gets a kick out of this.

It's not everyone that can delete all of Documents and Settings except for
%userprofile% and the Administrator.

The question that I'm not getting an answer to is when I change the
logon using control userpasswords2 whats the logon screen going to look
like?

Currently, when XP boots I click on my name and XP starts with my
settings. How is this going to change? Will XP start with my settings or
some other settings?

There will be NO logon screen, Windows will boot right to the desktop.

Wes,

Ah! TweakUI autologon confusion. Same can happen using userpasswords2 also, where the "Administrator" account is highlighted by default.

I'm wondering why you deleted the "Documents and Settings" folder first.
