Do you have to start MS Spyware to get protection or does
it start running automatically when you turn on your

It doesn't "run" at all. You need to ask it to scan.

Whether it runs in the background depends on choices you make in the setup
wizard, or under Options, settings.

For most users it does run in the background, providing real-time
protection--which is significantly more valuable than the scanning function.
