Hi,

I personally leave both of my computers on 24/7. I have various actions
scheduled at night. AutoUpdate for several programs at 1:00 a.m., Automatic
update at 3:00 a.m., etc.

If you turn it off at night, these will not run and you will soon be out of
date. You could schedule them to run during the dinner hour, etc.

The best advice on this subject:
You should leave the computer on 24 /
7...................................or else turn it at
night..........................or NOT.

It's either/or. Good arguments for each. Me? I leave it on all day,
off at night, or if I am going to be gone for a long time & unknown when
I'll be back.. You set your monitor to go into sleep mode after 10 minutes
of non-use. That's what draws most of the power, not the computer.

The question comes down to hard drives - is it better to let it spin 24/7,
or turn it off & on.. Some people say starting it up puts strain on it,
and others say having it run 24/7 will burn it out faster.. You do save a
bit by shutting down in electric bills, and with hard drive costing like
460 nowadays on sale, maybe you save enough electricity to pay for a new
hard drive in how many years?

I do have a 2nd and 3rd computer here. One is a P2 and the other a P3
both running Win 98. The P2 I know was in an office environment, because
when I bought it for like $50, it was loaded for an office as part of a
network. All I am saying is that with both the P2 and P3, the hard drives
still work fine, and I'll bet the P2 was used every day for a long time..
but I can't ask if they left it on or off at night...

So there you go. Take your pick.

And btw, the P2 works fine as wireless on a little home network of mine,
and realizes broadband speed - just saying to anyone, that a P2 & win 98
can do this - I use a USB wireless device in it, not a card in a slot
(card wouldn't work).

Turn it off at night. Schedule your tasks for times you
know you're away from the computer.

What about reclaiming system resources?
