When I shut down and turn off my PC I get a number of
error messages that they are not responding, for example
sgtray.exe. I close the messages with end now. Then
everything seems normal, windows is shutting down, then I
get "windows is saving your settings." That's when
everything stops. I have to unplug the PC to turn it off.

Please help

.
So I'm supposed to leave my PC on all the time. You
know I would like to turn off my PC without unplugging
it! I thought there might something in shutdown I can
correct.

I can't imagine how you came up with *that* conclusion from the link
Kelly gave you. Basically, you have programs that are refusing to exit
gracefully. The sgtray.exe for example, is unnecessary. You need to
clean up your computer, stop unnecessary programs from running in the
background, scan for viruses, and remove any spyware you've picked up.
Use the System Configuration tool (msconfig) to stop things from
starting. Here are general troubleshooting steps:

1) scan with current antivirus ("current" means a version not earlier
than 2002 but using updated virus definitions); 2) remove spyware with
Spybot Search & Destroy (www.safer-networking.org) and Ad-aware
(www.lavasoftusa.com). These programs are free, so use them both since
they complement each other. You may also want to run the latest
CWShredder from http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/index.html. Always
read the instructions before running a spyware removal tool. Be sure to
update these programs before running, and it is a good idea to do
virus/spyware scans in Safe Mode; 3) delete temporary and Temporary
Internet Files; 4) stop unnecessary services/programs from starting
with Windows - see www.blackviper.com for services info and
www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm for programs info - 5) look in
Event Viewer for clues; 6) make sure you've visited Windows Update and
applied all security patches; 7) run a firewall.

In addition to all that, you can go through the shutdown troubleshooter
