turning off background processes

i once rang microsoft to help me setup up an internet connection as xp
wouldnt let me. it turned out a background process was interfearing with it
so i was told to go start then run then type in _______ but im not sure wat
it was. it was a dialog box that allowed you to turn off background processes
such as antivirus etc. i now need to turn off these processes but i forgot
what to type in the run box. Could someone please tell me what it is?

Possibly you mean:
start >Run > msconfig> startup tab ?
