System Idle Process

For some reason, my laptop is constantly running some process. I have turned
off all background indexing processes (i.e. lookout, etc.), however these are
not the culprit. When I opened up the windows task manager, it showed that a
process named "System Idle Process" under the user name "System" was running
and using up most of the CPU. Can anyone tell me what this process is doing,
if it is necessary and if not, how I can turn it off. It causes the
processor to become very heated and the fan is running constantly at high
speed, resulting in the computer being both loud and slow. I'd appreciate
any advice. Thank you very much

This is not the cause of heat problems. System IDLE Process is the % of
CPU time _not_ being used...so the higher the number the better. It's
perfectly normal to see it in the 90%+ range.

Break out a dictionary and look up the word "idle," sometime. ;-}
The "System Idle Process" metric is the amount/percentage of time that
your CPU has _nothing_ to do. A reading of 98-99% is generally
considered a good thing, and readings above 90% are normal. Think of
it like a car's engine idling in your driveway before you place the
car in gear. If something's slowing down your computer, you'll have
to
look elsewhere.

If your computer is hot and the fan is buzzing at its highest
speed, you have a problem, but it isn't System Idle, which as has
been pointed out to you, is normally running at 99% on a well
maintained computer. It represents the system, idling (i.e., not
doing work). You may have dust blocking your air vents in your
laptop, causing your computer to get hot. Make sure your vents are
unobstructed. This is more likely if your laptop is a few years old.
