System Idle Process

Hi All,
When I am not using my computer the hard drive seems to start doing
something. (light blinking on and off and noise from hard drive) When I open
the Task Manager the only thing that seems to be doing anything is the
System Idle Process. What is the System Idle Process and is that what is
running my hard drive?
Any information is appreciated.

System Idle
is the amount of time that the computer is doing nothing, it is idle,
something else is accessing the drive, dunno what, or how to find it,

Hi George,
you system is doing stuff most of the time that the system
is "idle". If you're really interested in these [boring and complicated]
system maintenance routines then go to "Administrative Tools" on the Start
Menu and click on the icon named Event Viewer. This lists some of what your
computer does in it's spare time.

Hi George,
P.S. To find out what's eating the most of your
resources when you are not doing anything else then open up the Task Manager
(by pressing Alt-Ctrl-Del ONCE) and looking under the Process tab. Click on
the top of the column named "Mem Usage" doing this will arrange the list in
order from largest to smallest (like doing this with the size column in
explorer) and the items at the top of the list are the ones with all the
activity. Svchost.exe is usually one near to the top of the list. This
process starts many different processes and services used by the system and
is normal. Look for other ones that you know are unnecessary.
