Turning off a computer automatically

Sorry how do i turn off my computer automatically after i
have selected the shut down option.I see many people just
select the shut down option from the start menu and leave
without having to wait for the message "it is now safe to
turn off your computer" and then turning the computer off
from the switch.How is that done?
