Using Vista Premium on this new machine. On the task bar it list 3
keyboard items for num lock, caps lock and scroll lock. Is there any way to
stop these from displaying. Right click on these items bring up nothing.

Thanks

Right click on toolbar. Select properties, Notification Area, Click
Hide inactive I-cons then customize.

those are not really a part of vista, but some 3rd party software indicators
probably from your keyboard or if you are using a laptop, then its from
that.

press the round start button then in the search box type MSCONFIG
and press enter, go to the STARTUP tab and see there in the list..

one of those entries is the one you need to disable by removing the
checkmark

Or disable using Windows Defender...Software Explorer

Joseph's instructions worked. You are right though, I am going to go into
MSCONFIG to see what else is starting that I don't really need or want.
Speaking of the keyboard it is interesting to note also that I was playing
around and decided to map some of the extra buttons like the URL to bring up
the one I wanted. Following the instructions I went to the Keyboard
Properties/Buttons and none of the buttons were displayed to change although
they work with the default settings - HP Keyboard and Computer.

I can imagine why you cannot change the default..

the default buttons work because windows knows some basic commands for
generic keyboard functions like that...

however if you want to customize them, you will have to load the special
software
that comes with that keyboard... IF it is available for Vista...

in any case I would advise you to not load more stuff like this keyboard
utility...
vista is slow as it is.. you dont need more stuff running in the
background...

Hmmm, I haven't had time to look at Windows Defender or know what it is all
about. Will explore that this weekend.
