turn off shading when editing text in a placeholder in PowerPoint

How can I turn off the gray shading that comes on when editing text in a
textbox placeholder in PowerPoint 2003 professional?

I can't see my cursors location and other details when editing text. Click
outside of the text box and it becomes clear again. I find myself clicking
in the textbox to make changes then clicking outside of the textbox to see
the results :/

This shading "feature" wasn't in past versions of Powerpoint.

The color that appears when you start typing in textboxes or placeholders is
determined automatically based on the difference between the colors of your
slide background and the text. I'm surprised you're having difficulty seeing
the cursor and other details, though -- in my experience, the contrast is
generally pretty good, but sometimes we see some really ugly color
combinations!

You'll be happy to know that this shading is no longer in existence in PPT
2007.
