turn off marking message for deletion after being read

Where is the switch to turn off automatically marking a message deleted
after being read? I have a user that this just started happening today, so I
think there is something that he accidentally turned on.
I appreciate any help/suggestions.

There is no such switch. What makes you think they are being marked
deleted?
 
Are you sure they're not filtering their view to see only unread messages?
From the Outlook Inbox check View > Current View.
