Turn off computer hangs with program not responding

Running XP Home. After selecting "Turn off computer" a
window opens with the heading "SCANROM TSR". The window
has a Microsoft AFX symbol followed by "Ending program
please wait". After a few seconds the message changes
to "This program is not responding" and the shutdown
sequence stops. To continue shutdown I select END.
Previously I tried to install a scanner program called
SCANROM. SCANROM does not run on XP. There was no
uninstall program so I deleted all files and folders that
I had installed and disconnected the scanner which was in
series with my parallel port printer. Using explore
there are two references to SCANROM in
C\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\DATACOLL and one in
C\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\ALL USERS\APPLICATION
DATA\MICROSOFT\DR WATSON\drwtsn32.log. How can I fix
this shutdown problem?

i'd first try control panel/add or remove programs. is
the offending program listed there? try to delete from
there. if still a problem, you may have to search the
registry. DO NOT mess with your registry if you don't
know what you're doing. ALWAYS back up the registry
before opening/modifying it. my guess is you may have
references to the program in there. to open the registry,
start/run/regedit. be careful. this is one reason NOT to
install programs you don't know much/anything about.
