Trying to upgrade RAM-XP OS

I have 2 sticks of PC2100 512MB that was currently working fine. I bought a PC2100 1GB stick to add, as i have 3 expansion slots on board for RAM. New stick doesn't work. No problem. I put 2 old sticks back in where they were and now my system only boots correctly w/ 1 stick of original RAM in it. I've swapped them both to make sure nothing happened to them. They work fine individually. With both old sticks in, upon boot, the RAM is read correctly, but freezes and never gets to Drive detection and never completes the boot-up

Can anyone help

Thanks in advance!!

Did you determine if one slot works and the other doesn't. You could
have a minor problem with the contacts in the Slot.

I did verify that slots 1 and 2 are working properly with same single stick. Slot 3, for some reason, is not functioning. It does the same stall at the RAM reading stage of boot-up

Any suggestions?

I'm just puzzled how removing the original sticks then putting them back in does not work when just last night it was working fine. I guess that's what i get for being greedy and wanting more, more, more!!

What does your mobo manual say about RAM and slot order,
also supported RAM size?
What mobo do you have?

And for not checking the following: -

1) That the RAM you're buying is exactly the same as what you already
have (you can't just plug anything in). By that I mean speed (the number
after the DDR - 3200, 3500, 3700, 4000, etc) brand, even size.

2) Not visiting the manufacturer's site and checking a) the maximum
amount the motherboard can support and b) the maximum each *slot* can
support.

Why do you wish to upgrade?! Unless you're heavily into graphics or video
editing, you're not going to notice any difference, you might even notice a
degradation in performance. Adding more memory isn't the panacea many appear
to think it is.

Some motherboards do allow single or dual memory banks per stick. On
motherboards that have 3 slots, if the first two memory slots are filled
with dual bank memory modules, you can not used the third slot. Most PCs
that use DDR PC2100 memory only support 4 memory banks.
