Upgrade to 2GB ram

Hi I am trying to upgrade to 2gb of ram. I now have 3 sticks of 512 and
everything is fine. When I put in the 2 1gb sticks the bios shows 2gb, but
windows is only showing 256mb??? My rig is this: Gigabyte GA-K8N Pro
Nforce3 150 chipset, Athlon 64 3400+, 3 sticks OCZ performance pc3200 512mb
per stick, ATI x-850 video 256mb on board, two spinpoint sata drives. MBO
states will support up to 3GB memory of this type, but when I take the 3 512
chips out and install the two 1GB chips bios shows 2 GB, but windows only
shows 256 and the slowdown shows that windows really only thinks there is 256
in the machine. (extrememly slow to boot etc)
The new ram is the same type as is in the machine now, just larger chip.
I am open to any and all suggestions.

Thank you JS, but the bios does seem to be reporting the correct information,
it is in windows that the info is wrong. Could it be that I'm not running
64bit edition and that is the problem??

It may be that the memory isn't quite up to the quality required for XP.
64bit is not needed, as XP recognizes 4 gb memory space. You may try
replacing with better quality and ensure matching sticks.

Bob: The memory is the same as is in the machine running perfectly right
now. It is OCZ dual channel kit with ocz performance ddr ram. Thanks for
trying to help.

Switch it with the working one to verify.

Try just using one stick at a time, this should give you 1GB, see if Windows
recognizes each stick properly.

What happens if you boot with just a single 1 gb module in place?

That may be a clue as to what the underlying cause of your problems
are.

Good luck

A different board, I've got 3.5gb availabe with the 32-bit version.
(There is 4gb installed, the rest goes to waste.)
