I want to be able to use the printer I have connected to my desktop to be
able to print when using my laptop. I think I have things set up correctly
on the desktop, but can't seem to get it working on the laptop. (I have
provided a 'Share Name' as directed while setting up in the desktop pc. Once
at the laptop I am stuck where it says to "Select Browser for a printer". I
do not show any printers in the list, so I know I am doing something wrong,
but don't know what. If I go into the Printer/Fax Folder I do not see a
printer there either. Did I miss a step? Really could use some help please.
Both machines are XP, desktop is running KIS 7.0 (with KIS firewall, Windows
Firewall is disabled) Laptop is running McAfee. I have a Linksys wireless
WRT54G which is working fine with the laptop, cable modem connection for
internet. Printer is a Photosmart 77760. I hope this is enough information
to get help? Thank you.

You need to modify Windows Firewall with an "Exception". Open the
control applet in Control Panel ( Classic View ) and on the Exceptions
(TAB) place a check/tic the "File and Printer Sharing" option. Once
you've "Shared" the printer Windows by default will automatically look
for and install any network shared printers.

google 'how to share a printer' you'll get a lot of reading.

Right click your printer and pick sharing, is it?

Go to the other machine and browse. Entire network|microsoft
networks|workgroup (whatever you are using)|PC (desktop name|

do you have a printer shared.

If none of this works then you do have a glitch.
If you get to the printer just click on it (connect) and it will install
on the remote.

computer...
I don't know whether the following will be of any help to you in resolving
your problem, but take a look at it. We prepared this as a handout at a
meeting of some members of a local computer club who were interested in this
issue.

SHARING A PRINTER
The following assumes that the PCs on the network are communicating with
each other satisfactorily and that the PC to which the printer is connected
is powered on.

On the computer to which the printer is installed...
1. Begin by noting the "Full computer name" of this computer. If you don't
know the computer name, it can be found through Start > Control Panel >
System > Computer Name tab. (Pressing the Wincey + Pause keys will also
display the System Properties window and its Computer Name tab). In this
example we'll assume the Computer Name is ANNA.

2. Start > Control Panel > Printers and Faxes > right-click on printer and
click on Sharing.

3. Select the "Share this printer" option under the Sharing tab, and in the
"Share name" text box enter a name for the printer, e.g., "HP3310" (no
quotes) - it's always best to avoid spaces in the name entered. Make a note
of the printer name and click OK.

On the computer that wishes to access the printer...
1. Start > Control Panel > Printers and Faxes > Add Printer > "Add Printer
Wizard" will open. Click Next.

2. Select the option "A network printer, or a printer attached to another
computer". Click Next.

3. In the "Specify a Printer" dialog that opens select the option "Connect
to a printer on the Internet or on a home or office network:". In the "URL"
text box enter the path to the printer, e.g., \\ANNA\HP3310. Note the two
backslashes preceding the Computer Name. Click Next.

4. The "Connect to Printer" confirmation dialog box will open indicating
that a printer driver will be installed on this machine. Click "Yes" to
continue.

5. In the "Default Printer" dialog box that opens, presumably you will
select the "Yes" option for using this printer as the default printer. Click
Next.

6. The "Completing the Add Printer Wizard" window will open summarizing the
printer settings. Verify the info and click Finish.
