trying to recover from a corrupted boot sector file

I am trying to use the Windows XP setup disk to recover from a corrupted
file. (Unable to start XP ---message says windows\system32\config\system is
missing or corrupted)
I have a Maxtor SATA 200g drive and when the Xp startup procedure tells me
to load scsi or raid controllers from manufactturers support disk i do this
(using Maxblast diskette I get a message "The File txtsetup.oem could not be
found" this is not surprising since there is no file of this name on the
Maxblast diskette.
So basically the Xp CD does not see my hard drive
Can anyone help me to proceed.

Try to find your motherboard manufacturer cd. Browse the cd and look for a
sata folder. You may find several subfolders and you will have to try them
all one by one by copying them into a floppy.
Then boot from the cdrom and press f6 when indicated to install aditional
drivers. Insert the floppy and xp will detect the drivers for the sata hdd as
additional storage device, then you can proceed to do a system restore.

Thanks for that I can now enter the repair console but I have not used this
before and therefore don't know what commands to use to recover from my
missing or corrupted file

Any further help would be appreciated

In the Recovery Console type:

cd system32\config [enter]
ren system system.old [enter]
ren system.alt systemalt.old [enter]
copy c:\windows\repair\system [enter]
copy c:\windows\repair\regback\system [enter]
exit [enter]
