Trying to record back to a DV Tape Deck

I have been teaching a group of nuns on how to use Windows Movie Maker for
their orphange, and for the most part, the software was very easy for them to
use when editing the videos for potential adoptive parents. However, when it
came time for me to show them how to record back their edited videos to tape
(in this case they are using a JVC DV/VHS deck). All I get after going
through the steps of exporting the video to tape is nothing but a black
screen on the tape.
Unfortunately, my experience as an editor has been limited to Final Cut
Pro, Avid and very little windows movie maker. Do i need to export the entire
edited timeline as 1 AVI file before I try to export the video out to tape,
or can I just take what is on the timeline and record it to tape.
**NOTE: The JVC deck that the nuns are using is a firewire deck that was
meant for both capturing (which works) and recording. Unfortunately, the guy
who sold and "installed" the equipment skipped town, and was not much help
for them.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated (either a website that I
can refer to or a manual that I can read or something)...Many many thanks.

miggy.

Consider anything on the timeline to be the file being exported... it's a 2
step process. Movie Maker saves the movie (timeline) as a temporary DV-AVI
file and then copies that file to the recorder.

Try saving it to the hard drive as a DV-AVI file and use the WinDV utility
to then copy it from there to the recorder... there's a link to WinDV on my
Setup > Other Software page.
