Trying to install Defender - Installation Error

After validation, etc. I get a message saying Microsoft Windows OneCare Live
has been found. Please remove that product and rerun the setup.

OneCare was removed a long time ago. I've scanned my drives looking for
OneCare anywhere -- not there.

Scanned my registry -- not there.

Running WIN XP Pro. SP2, IE7.

Hello Intrac,

Whatever you do, (installing and updateting or unistalling) always as a
administrator.

Run CCleaner
http://www.ccleaner.com/downloadbuilds.asp
Ccleaner - http://www.ccleaner.com
Note, When you install Ccleaner, uncheck the Yahoo toolbar option.
Note: uncheck in Applications, the box for Utilities.

CCleaner even has a built-in Registry Cleaner. It's not the best (not
CCleaner's main function), but it will find invaild registry entries that
most Registry Cleaners will not. Unlike the Disk Cleaners with a Registry
Cleaner, CCleaner does really fast scanning for Registry Issues. The reason
is CCleaner doesn't want to effect Windows performance or effect any
applications. It's better to be safe than sorry!

Do a scan with all the check marks on.

Open Ccleaner and press "Windows" "Aplications" and Run Cleaner from the
menu choose 'Issues' and then press scan for issues, Repair any fºund.
Run twice Ccleaner, the same as above, until you get “No Issues were foundâ€.

Look for the broom Clean up, also Tune Up..

Good luck

I had run CCCleaner a few days ago and cleaned it all up.

I ran the Clean up and Tune Up on OneCare live \.

Defender still won't install. Same message.

Thanks.

Hi intrac,

Look in c:/windows for the folder "SoftwareDistribution" delete all the
sub-folders. Reboot
and try again to install.

If no joy
Try with Dial a Fix, with all the boxes checked ON,.
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix
and, again, try the installation

I hope this post is helpful.

Thanks.
I removed the folders as suggested. Still didn't install.
Downloaded Dial-a-fix. (interesting program), but same results.

Please check with the OneCare folks--or do a Google search--you might be
able to find the script file as a download somewhere. I would assume
CCleaner is capable of removing all the OneCare stuff from the registry, but
you'd be far better off with a script designed for the purpose from
Microsoft.

OK - here's where to go:

http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsOneCare/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=663803&SiteID=2

This has a link to an executable uninstall tool.

('course, I just ran it on my own system, and it bombed--but maybe it'll
work better for you!)

Check my later messages above--there's a direct link to the relevant forum
and executable code.

FYI -- I found the OneCare Cleaner tool and ran it---it stopped partway with a message " Cleanup had errors -- Cleanup stopped because an MSI uninstall failed. Please contact support"

I'm looking in the OneCare forum as you suggest.

Thanks.

Good luck. In my case, I ran the cleanup tool several times, and
eventually, it was successful.
