Trying to Import Bookmark file

I

Irish

I'm trying to import a bookmark.htm file into MSIE on a
new laptop. Using the Import/Export Wizard I've selected
the bookmark.htm file on a CD-RW disk which is in the CD
drive of the new computer. When I click Save a dialog
box opens saying: You do not have permission to save in
this directory. See the administrator to obtain
permission. Would you like to save in the My Documents
folder instead?

I have the sole owner and user of this laptop so who the
hell is the administrator. I have no idea that the
original directory is. Why would I want to save this file
in a my documents directory?

Why does this have to be so damn confusing?!!!

The administrator by default can save to any directory on the computer. It is
possible you are not logged on as an administrator. You can use [ net user username ]
and [ net localgroup administrators ] to see membership of the local administrators
group. Just because you are the owner, does not mean you are logged on as an
administrator. The reason it asks to use your documents directory is because by
default users have write access to their profile folders which may be the only place
thay can write to. My comments reflect experience with XP Pro and XP Home may
iffer. -- Steve

Steve,

This is a personal, home computer and there are no other
users. Where and how do I "use [ net user username ] and
[ net localgroup administrators ] to see membership of
the local administrators group"? How can I see if I'm
logged on as administrator?

Thanks for replying!

Hi Paul.

Run those at the command prompt. Entering cmd in the run box should bring up the
command prompt. You can also use lusrmgr.msc in the run box to open local users and
computers - at least in Pro, not sure about Home. You woul have to use one of those
methods to see if the account you are logged on with is an administrator
