i bought an upgrade for a program that i had lost hte disk (why i bought the
upgrade)
during the install it asks me for the serial number of the old product
(which i don't have) , i am assuming it is listed in the computer somewhere
if anyone has any idea
i appreciate it

Try the following:

Visit http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html and download the free
Belarc Advisor. After running the program, look under the section
titled "Software Licenses".

neat little program unfortunatly doesn't provide me with the serial number
know of any other programs similar to the belarc one?

If you were to mention the "program" maybe someone could "guide" you on how
to retreive the serial number. Most serial numbers seem to be stored
somewhere in the XP registry. Some, like XP, may get "emcrypted" into a
different format.

I do not know if this would help? Cool Edit Pro has now been taken over by
Adobe.

aye i know that i have the upgrade from the cool edit i have to audition
1.5 , audition install does'nt care that cool edit is on there it wants the
serial number from cool edit , adobe tech support pretty much told me i was
sol cause i wasn't in the database they got from syntrillium when they
bought em out

You wont find the original key. Ask the author for one.

Did you actually try it, before giving that advice? The information
the OP wants is not given by Everest Home, according to
<http://www.lavalys.com/products/eapm.php?pid=3&lang=en>.

However, Aida32 Enterprise is free, and gives software license. It's
available at
http://forum.aumha.org/overflow/aida32.zip
The OP might at least try it. However, if the software doesn't save
its license number somewhere there will be nothing to find.
