Trying to connect a printer, but get an error...

Hi,

I can ping the computer I am trying to connect to, I can also do a net view
\\computername and it shows the resources.

I can even use net use lpt1: \\computer\printername

and it will connect.to it.

But, when I try to add the printer, pick a network printer, it shows up on
the list. When I click it and select next I get:

Windows cannot connect to the printer.
Make sure that you have typed the name
correctly, and that the printer is
connected to network.

This was working fine, then one day two printers disappeared. Both printers
give the same message when I try to connect to them.

I've tried disabling the firewall on both sides and it did not change
anything.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Alan

Hi,

I tried that. I got the driver installed locally to LPT1 no problem, but
when I went to the ports tab there is no field to just change it to
\\computername\sharename. How do you change the location?

Thanks,

Alan

I have exactly the same error. The printer shows as present when I select
the computer in my network places. But, when I try to connect, I get the
error. I have tried adding the printer as a local port and various other
solutions but I simply can't connect to a remote printer even though I can
see the device.

I have tried that approach. However, when I follow the steps and try to add
the new path, I get an access denied message. I have tried everything but it
seems to be an access rights issue on one particular Vista Home Premium
computer as other vista computers in the house can access the printer without
difficulty.
