try to open excel files from explorer, 'file not found'

When I try to open Excel files from within Windows Explorer a pop up window
tells me "Windows cannot find the file...make sure you typed the name
correctly."

The same file opens OK if opened from Excel, just not through Explorer.

Could anyone tell me what the problem is and what I need to do to solve it.

Any help would be appreciated.

You need to set the options for the XLS (or other) back to the default. From
window Explorer in windows XP.

Tools - Options - File Types - XLS ( or other) - Advance

Select OPEN, then press Set Default.

Sometimes one of these works when you're having trouble with double clicking on
the file in windows explorer:

Tools|Options|General|Ignore other applications (uncheck it)
(xl2003 menus)

--- or ---

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets some of the windows registry to
excel's factory defaults.
