Try to Crea an LAN on a PC with TimeWarnerCabl Broadband

My Sisterinlaw on Saten Island uses AOL timeWarnerCable
service,Called me to intall the ethernet in her house.
After tring so many times unsucsessefull. Iam screaming
for help!
Ethernet by it self (without internet)works fine;
and timewarnerCable also works fine (without ethernet).
Seems to me the AOLTimewarner cable setup is preventing
the ethernet to share the internet connection.
maybe AOLTimeWarner Cablemodem has a conflict with the
Hawking 8 port ethernet switch . and AOL requaire Ther
own Brand of switch/router to work.
Anyone has an Idea what solution can I have, Pleas

I used to live in Staten Is. myself...now I live in Israel and work in
Internet support for local ISP and I also have cable Internet at home with
Ethernet (NIC) interface...
Is your question about using cable Internet with NIC on a STAND ALONE PC or
in a LAN,ie ICS (SHARING)?
Probably you were asking the 2nd...If so...what happens is that a NIC on a
PC that connects to a cable modem gets an IP address from cable Co.Whether
it's a legal address for surfing (external one,say,84.94.x.x)
or illegal one to surf (ie internal one ,like 172.x.x.x)...But the problem
is that in XP you define an AUTOMATIC IP addressing in Properties of NIC
(default of ISP or Cable Co.in your case),where in LAN you use DEFINED
address,say 192.168.0.2....therefore Internet wouldn't work,but LAN would.
And when you cancel LAN and have an automatic IP address in NIC...,then
Internet works and LAN doesn't.
I personally don't know much about ICS,so I can't help much here...
Here in Israel we have a dialer to connect to cable Internet (called also
Open Access),where NIC always has an illegal address to surf (172.x.x.x)
,ie. internal address and when you dial-you also get an external IP address
from the ISP (say,84.94.x.x)
