Re: Have a wireless 'always on' broadband system, on a server computer in
the dining room, being able to connect to internet, (OS is Win XP Pro).
with a wired Sitecom network 5 port switch system to 2 bedrooms, working fine
in morning, then in afternoon, computers in bedrooms could not connect to
internet, the pc icon has the exclamation mark stating not connected, yet
is shown on the server computer downstairs as connected and working fine.
Checked all network connections etc, are correct on all computers. Have
replaced the Sitecom network switch, with a new one. Just to point out I
cannot use a wireless or router system in the house, having wireless unit in
computer, coming in from an aerial on the roof. I cannot see the other
computers on ‘my network places’, yet says the LAN is connected? Please, can
someone help me? I am in the process of selling this property and don't
want it to not go through, because of this problem.
Since this happened, now cannot get online when using administrator
account, yet icons says its connected, but can access the internet on the
other 2 user accounts, any explanation of this please?
To add to this, in reply to Chuck, giving me good advice, (yes, do supply
server PC to tenants, free,) was unable to check for a few days: suggested
I do a ‘ipconfig /all’ this I have done on server and one other computer,
(2nd tenant not in house to check hers). Results are as follows:

OK, to start, you might want to make your problem reports more readable.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/how-to-post-on-usenet-and-encourage.html#Grammar>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/how-to-post-on-usenet-and-encourage.html#Grammar

And please post replies in the same thread - don't start a new thread each time.
Don't make us have to hunt for your previous problem report, that makes us work
harder, and you get less help.

Now, ThuyTran shows limited or no connectivity. Please spend some time reading
about this issue - there are several possibilities, so follow the links.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/limited-or-no-connectivity.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/limited-or-no-connectivity.html

And post "ipconfig /all" for the third computer as soon as you can. We need
that, to properly diagnose your problem.

Can you tell me if I should use this thread or the original one? When sending
the other ipconfig /all? Sorry about that, thought it would help you, as
I'd sent original a few days before. I am willing to learn. I will try and
get the other computers ipconfig /all as soon as the tenant is in the house.
In the mean time is there anything else I should check on the host & client
computers? I am only wanting to be able to get the client computers to
access the internet, not read any files on the host/server computer, does
this make any difference?

Are you also able to tell me why I'm not able to get online, when in the
administrator account, when the 2 user accounts can get online on the host
computer only? Is this an ISP problem? Thanks for your help so far. I'm
sorry if I come across as not knowing much, can do as instructed, but do
not always understand the why's! Please keep any instructions simple for me.
Thanks.

This thread is fine. But try and type your answers after mine please.

Don't sweat the whys, and the fact that you aren't too experienced here. This
is a place where we all learn. Just be patient and persistent.

And sometimes the smallest detail helps to solve a problem like yours, so be
generous.

Now online access to one of your computers MAY be a problem, in one network
configuration, so please indulge me, make it easier on both of us, and provide
"ipconfig /all" from the other computer. I'll be patient, and await your next
post.

Doesn't this address indicate that this computer can't find a DHCP server?
Isn't this a default address selected from those assigned to Microsoft for
use in this particular situation?

Inability to find a DHCP server can come from either of several problems.
# Lack of connectivity.
# Connectivity, but no DHCP server.
# Connectivity, but the DHCP server is busy or not working.

The 169.254.x.x is an APIPA address, assigned by Windows when it doesn't get a
return from a DHCP request.

Can you tell me how I get the DHCP enabled on the host PC? As says it's not
enabled, yet ThuyTran's is enabled, would this make a difference? Thanks

The setting "DHCP" means the DHCP client is on. The Network Setup Wizard will
take care of that.

Is 81m111ad the "host computer"? Your terminology is a bit vague. Let's start
by having you run the Network Setup Wizard on both computers. When you run it on
81m111ad (assuming that's the "host computer"), select
This computer connects directly to the Internet. The other computers on my
network connect to the Internet through this computer.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/using-network-setup-wizard-in-windows.html#ICSHost
When you run it on ThuyTran, select
This computer connects to the Internet through another computer on my network or
through a residential gateway.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/using-network-setup-wizard-in-windows.html#NATClient>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/using-network-setup-wizard-in-windows.html#NATClient

Then rerun "ipconfig /all" on both, and post updated. And please learn how to
copy and paste.

Chuck, I have still been unable to get the other 'ipconfig /all' yet, but
did try to run the network setup wizard, but this host computer just would
not install it, just kept saying it would take time to transfer with the one
computer icon going towards the other one, gave it 20 mins, nothing
happened, infact the only way to stop it was to do Ctrl+Alt+delete, as the
cancel was blanked out as well as OK. Plus this computer would not shut
down correctly, as I had to disable the Firewall, I'd recently added, as
it was causing problems on the internet only on the administrator account,
gets to 'Windows is shutting down' but freezes here, won't shut down, have
to press the re-set button, which then couldn't complete the disable of the
Firewall on Msconfig. However tried again and it worked, but still had to
shut down with the reset button. Any idea on this, I will enter this
problem in the relevant section, incase you do not want to sort this out for
me. So as I said I have not run the setup wizard on any again. Gave up on
it last night. Just wanted to keep you informed of my lack of progress.
Sorry. I do know how to copy & paste thanks. Heather

LAN working again? Await your answer. Heather

Heather,

OK, let's start over. We need a complete "ipconfig /all" from manchest-56c115.
# Open a command window.
# Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt", and hit Enter.
# Type "notepad c:\ipconfig.txt", and hit Enter.
# Email c:\ipconfig.txt, or copy the text from the file, from Notepad. Your
choice.
# Copy the text contents, complete and unedited (not by hand please), and paste
into your next message.

You're going to have to work on the computers in question. We can't diagnose
the problems with you telling me that you don't have access. And you're going
to have to post a complete and easily readable "ipconfig /all" log from each
computer. So far, only 81m111ad appears complete, and none of them is readable.

Then you're going to have to check the Sitecom network switch (where did you get
that), or consider getting a reliable router or switch at your local computer
store. With all computers connected to the switch / router, does the switch /
router indicate connections to each computer?

Once you verify connection to each of the 3 computers from the router / switch,
you need to run the Network Setup Wizard on ThuyTran and manchest-56c115.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/using-network-setup-wizard-in-windows.html#NATClient

Neither one, from viewing the "ipconfig /all" (what there is anyway) shows signs
of proper network connectivity. Please review in detail my article on ipconfig,
and on providing diagnostics in general, and understand what you're missing by
hand typing this information.

network connect to the Internet through this computer.

When you run it on ThuyTran, select
This computer connects to the Internet through another computer on my network or
through a residential gateway.

Then rerun "ipconfig /all" on both, and post updated. And please learn how to
copy and paste.

Cheers,
Chuck, MS-MVP [Windows - Networking]

Heather

It's me again, have at last got the ipconfig. It was done as print
screen,& sent by email, which I can't copy here, so have had to type it,
(exactly as printed), then copy & paste, per below:

Hope you are now able to tell me what to do to get the connections on the
LAN working again?

Sorry, have checked back and realise I have missed the Auto configuration IP
address, sent it all again (per below). Yes, I do know how to copy text
into Notepad, but the 2 client (ThuyTran & manchest-56c115) computers, not
able to save once in Notepad to a source I can then copy and paste into this
thread! Not without copying onto a CD, as no floppy disk on their
computers, as no access to host computer to copy to, it having the floppy
disk and internet access.

Don’t know how I check the Sitecom Network Switch, it has green lights
flashing to the computers in question and a red one for the mains. Bought
from a firm called Maplin Electronics, website: www.maplin.co.uk recently
brand new, replaced when this problem appeared. I have 2 more houses using
this Sitecom network switch for up to 7 computers, 6 clients & the host PC,
working fine. However I will wait and see if you can give me more info.,
now you have the IP address, per below.

Heather (from England, UK)

Heather,

OK, you're doing a bit better here. The bottom line, though, is that neither
manchest-56c115 nor ThuyTran are getting DHCP settings from 81m111ad. They are
both getting APIPA settings.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/limited-or-no-connectivity.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/limited-or-no-connectivity.html

So I'm sure that Sitecom switches are legit equipment, but since I don't know
anything about them, you'll have to be patient while I see if anything is
available on the web about them. If you got a manual, you might try reading
that. After you read the above article.

Or you could try running the Network Setup Wizard on 81m111ad, and select
This computer connects directly to the Internet. The other computers on my
network connect to the Internet through this computer.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/using-network-setup-wizard-in-windows.html#ICSHost

So please learn how to read the lights on the switch - that's where we need to
start.

Heather

It's me again, have at last got the ipconfig. It was done as print
screen,& sent by email, which I can't copy here, so have had to type it,
(exactly as printed), then copy & paste, per below:

Hope you are now able to tell me what to do to get the connections on the
LAN working again? Await your answer. Heather

Heather,

OK, let's start over. We need a complete "ipconfig /all" from manchest-56c115.
# Open a command window.
# Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt", and hit Enter.
# Type "notepad c:\ipconfig.txt", and hit Enter.
# Email c:\ipconfig.txt, or copy the text from the file, from Notepad. Your
choice.
# Copy the text contents, complete and unedited (not by hand please), and paste
into your next message.

Heather,

OK, you're doing a bit better here. The bottom line, though, is that neither
manchest-56c115 nor ThuyTran are getting DHCP settings from 81m111ad. They are .... (not recorded anymore here)....

Chuck,
Here is the website to get the manual for the Sitecom Network Switch,
http://www.sitecom.com/manuals_result.php?groupid=4&productid=158&Network Switch 5 port&LN-112

I will copy here some of the content for you, here, it does not mean much
to me, maybe you will understand it?
This switch is a 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX auto-negotiation switch, which provides
an ideal solution for ‘small networking workgroups’. Compliant to IEEE

all ports
All ports support both MDI and MDI-X interfaces for cascading
Store-and-Forward switching architecture with low latency
Automatic polarity detection and inversion
Fragment and alignment error frames filtering
Collision detection and handling
Plug-and-play operation

• PWR LED, indicates power is present (This has a picture of the Front
Panel, can’t show here).
• P1~P5 LED (LN-112), port status LED’s indicating the status of each of the
5 ports.
• Speed 100 Mbps LED, A green LED indicates if the speed is 100 Mbps.
• Link/Activity LED, when the LED is lit then there’s a link, when the LED
blinks then there’s activity.
There is a picture of the rear panel also on this manual + another.

I’m still have problems trying to run the Network setup wizard, on 81m11ad
it gets to the point of saying wait while it installs but just continues with
the ‘OK’ & ‘Cancel’ blanked out, had to use ctrl+alt+delete to stop it after
10 minutes. Could it take longer to install than this? I definitely selected
‘This computer connects directly to the Internet. The other computers on my
network connect to the Internet through this computer’, when originally used
the setup wizard.

I will try and read the lights with the above list and tell you what it’s
doing, when next go down to this house.
Hope this helps you.

Doesn't this address indicate that this computer can't find a DHCP server?
Isn't this a default address selected from those assigned to Microsoft for
use in this particular situation?
Jim

Inability to find a DHCP server can come from either of several problems.
# Lack of connectivity.
# Connectivity, but no DHCP server.
# Connectivity, but the DHCP server is busy or not working.
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/limited-or-no-connectivity.html

The 169.254.x.x is an APIPA address, assigned by Windows when it doesn't get a
return from a DHCP request.

Can you tell me how I get the DHCP enabled on the host PC? As says it's not
enabled, yet ThuyTran's is enabled, would this make a difference? Thanks
Olim22

The setting "DHCP" means the DHCP client is on. The Network Setup Wizard will take care of that.

Is 81m111ad the "host computer"? Your terminology is a bit vague. Let's start
by having you run the Network Setup Wizard on both computers. When you run it on
81m111ad (assuming that's the "host computer"), select
This computer connects directly to the Internet. The other computers on my
network connect to the Internet through this computer.

When you run it on ThuyTran, select
This computer connects to the Internet through another computer on my network or
through a residential gateway.

Then rerun "ipconfig /all" on both, and post updated. And please learn how to
copy and paste.

Cheers,
Chuck, MS-MVP [Windows - Networking]

Have been down and checked the Network Switch as follows:
• PWR LED, is showing RED, indicating power is present
• P1~P5 LED (LN-112), port status LED’s indicating the status of each of

blinking.
Speed 100 Mbps LED Shows a green LED light indicates speed is 100 Mbps
Link/Activity LED, the LED is showing green, which indicates there's a
link, but is not blinking, so there's no activity.
Also someone has come in and checked the cabling, says it is working fine,
I have also done the Network Setup Wizard on all 3 computers, still not
working? Only the internet on the host computer downstairs. Any further
advice please? Heather
