Truncated files and error report

I'm running Windows XP Home Edition on a 500MHz PIII system (512GB RAM, two
HDs). I have AdAware and Spybot S&D (both updated regularly) and I check my
AVG program for updates each time I go online.

The system, which originally ran on W98SE, has been stable and reliable for
more than four years. I've always made a point of closing each app
individually before powering down and I've only ever seen the boot-up
CHKDSK(?) routine a couple of times following power failures - until today.
This time, CHKDSK appeared during boot-up and reported progress percentage
as usual, but also reported that it found errors in the 'initialisation
unit' (I think that's what it said) of some half a dozen files, which it
said would be truncated.

Clicking on a More Info link produced an Error Signature box containing: a
BC Code (8-digit alphanumeric); four BCP codes (ditto); OS version:
5_1_2600; SP:1_0 and Product: 768_1.

A View Technical Information link in the above box produced an Error Report
Contents box. This contained path details of a .dmp file and a sysdata.xml
file on my C: drive.

Nothing more seemed to be happening but I noticed that the HD light was lit
steadily, so I let the system run on. Eventually the Windows XP Welcome
screen appeared, together with a message to say that my system had
'recovered from a serious error', after which everything seems to have
returned to normal.

I've never seen anything remotely like this performance before. I haven't a
clue what it all means - and I'm wondering whether to take it as some kind
of warning that my C: drive is about to turn its toes up. Would someone
please advise?

TIA
