Troubleshoot outlining formatting in Word

G

Guest

When doing a numbered outline list (or any outline list) in Word, suddenly
Word has stopped indenting and demoting the outline levels and is simply
tabbing over when I hit tab. Thus, if I have:

A)Topic Guide
B)Rationale

then I want to put 1. under Rationale, I've always just hit the Enter and
then Tab and it's given me this result:

A)Topic Guide
B)Raitonale
1. Next point

Now all it does is tab over:

A)Topic Guide
B)Rationale
C) Next Point

I've been using this for YEARS and it's worked fine. Now all of a sudden
I've done something to mess it up. I don't want to go out of the Print
Layout View into Outlining because that view is dreadful and confusing.

What did I do? What can I do?

You don't mention what version of Word you have. Believe it or not, this is
significant.

1. In Word 2000 or earlier, check the box for "Tabs and backspace set left
indent" on the Edit tab of Tools | Options.

2. In Word 2002/2003, check the box for "Set left- and first-indent with
tabs and backspaces" on the AutoFormat As You Type tab of Tools |
AutoCorrect Options.
