I am currently trying to set up a home network. I am
using a d-link router to connect two computers both using
windows xp home. My desktop is a LAN connection and my
laptop is a wireless. I have done the network setup
ulility. I can accsess the internet etc. from both of
these computers. However from either computer, if I try
to access the other computer's shared folder I get an
error message stating that I do not have access to that
device. The only reason I even need to network these
computers is so that I can share the printer attached to
the desktop. I hope that is enough info, hopefully
someone out there can help me with this.

There could be a couple of things causing this. Firstly
can you ping (from the command prompt)one computer from
the other and vice versa, this will help to confirm if a
firewall is getting in the way. More likely, it is an
issue with permissions. Do you have identical accounts
and passwords on both machines. If you use different
names/passwords on each machine, then the second machine
probably isn't recognising the account that you logged on
to the first machine with.

Ashley,

For file sharing between XP Home systems, you have to have the Guest account
enabled on both. Have you done that?

Do either of the computers have a software firewall (ICF or third party)? If
so, you need to configure them for file sharing, by opening ports TCP 139, 445
and UDP 137, 138, 445, and / or by identifying the other computers as present in
the Local (Trusted) zone. Firewall configurations are a very common cause of
(network) browser, and file sharing, problems.

Cheers,

Thanks for your help.

I have made sure that both of the accounts are the same,
also I can ping both machines from each other. But I
still have the same problem. On my desktop the laptop
doesn't even show up and if I try to view workgroup
computers I get an error "network is not accessible. You
might not have permission to use this network resource."
On the laptop the desktop does show up but I can't access
it. Any more ideas?

Ashley,

If you have visibility problems, in addition to checking for a firewall blocking
file sharing, you need to check the browser service on both computers. Control
Panel - Administrative Tools - Services. Verify that the Computer Browser
service is started.

Ashley,

Is the Guest account enabled on both computers?

From each computer, Start - Run - \\IPAddressOfOtherComputer - do any shares
display?

Are any firewalls involved?
