Trouble with Temp Internet Files/View Source

R

Ripley

For some reason the folders in my Temporary Internet Files folder are no longer viewable/accessabile. I have all folder options set to show hidden folders and file types
as well as system folders. It used to be that the Content.IE5 folder and all subfolders were visible. Nor can I see the folders via View/Explorer BAr/Folders from the folder menu. Chossing Properties of the Temp Internet Files folder indicates that there are 2 folders with 54 MBs of stuff, but the only thing visable are several cookie files. I am logged in as Administrator

I became aware of this problem when noting that choosing View Source (either by right clicking or from the Menu Bar) in a web page no longer does anything (this too used to work). I researched this problem and applied all the fixes but with no improvement. Both the TEMP and TMP enviornmental variables are set to C:\Documents and Settings\me (the administrator)\Local Settings\Temp; I deleted all the Temp Internet Files and rebooted; notepad is chosen as the HTML editor in Internet Options; and there is no shortcut named notepad on the desktop; notepad exists in the Windows folder.

Another symptom:

When I save a web page to favorites no custom icons appear in the right side Favorites window; even with sites, such as Yahoo and Google, that have such icons. Even if I choose Never (reload page) in Intrenet Explorer Tools/Internet Options/Settings, pages still take a long time to display when hitting the Back button

My system is WXP SP1 asd IE6 all latest upgrades.

Any ideas about what's wrong.

Ripley,
Sounds like your cache folders are corrupt ......
Note: by default you should have 4 (random name) cache folders
[example]
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5
4 folders
1 Desktop.ini
1 index.dat

Thanks for your reply Mike.

I followed the advice from mvps.org and created a new user account B with admin privileges, logged on and opened the Temp Internet Files folder of the original account A. To my surprise, Content.IE5 and all subfolders were now visible. In any case, thinking the cache was corrupt, as you suggested, I deleted the entire TIF folder and re-logged on to A.

First of all, this solved the problem that began all this - the View Source function in IE6 now works.

Also, after surfing the web, all the proper files, gifs, icons appear in the TIF folder. So everything is OK.

However, curiously, the Content.IE5 folder and subfolders and index.dat are not visible, but the files contained in these folders are all directly visible in the TIF folder as if no subfolders existed. But viewing the TIF folder of account B when logged on to A, all the subfolders and index.dat are visible. Conversely, when logged on to B, all subfolders of TIF in A are visible but not those in B.

That is: clicking Properties of the TIF folder shows 107 files in 5 folders, but opening the TIF folder gives 106 files (no index.dat) and no folders, tho those 105 files are, in fact, contained in the 5 invisible folders.

Obviously, this is some kind of system wide configuration. I know that just recently all subfolders of the TIF were visible in the accounted logged on to. I have recently updated IE6 and I wonder if this was altered then?

In any case, all is functioning as it should, so your advice led to a solution. Thanks again.

Ripley,
In the account that you can not view the hidden files\folders, do you
have the option in Windows Explorer to "Show hidden files"?
There is also several other options there "Hide protected system files",
and "registered file types" ...... glad you have resolved the View Source
problem.

Yes, WXP is configured to show all hidden files/folders as
well as system files.

All files are shown in the TIF folder of the account I'm
logged onto, but none of the subfolders are shown. After
deleting it's content (and all of the visible files ARE
deleted), chosing properties indicates that the TIF folder
still contains (for example) 10 folders 11 files
(obviously just .ini and .dat files), tho none are
visible. The interesting thing here is that all of those
hundreds of visible files deleted were, in fact contained
in the subfolders (Content.IE5 and its subfolders) but
were shown as if the subfolders didn't exist. Examining
the same TIF folder from a different user account shows
this to be true.

Checking the TIF folder of an account I'm not logged on to
shows all subfolders. So, obviously, this is a system wide
problem.

It's no big deal, but it means that if I want to delete
the TIF subfolders, I have to first log on to a different
account. Your suggestion did, in fact, solve my problem

Hi,
"It's no big deal, but it means that if I want to delete the TIF
subfolders"
Don't do that as it will further corrupt the cache ..........

As pointed out on the page ........ delete the following folder:
"C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files"
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

This will delete all the sub-folders and the index.dat, on restart
the required files\folders will be recreated.
