trouble with router

I've got a xp pro installed on a PC and I'm trying to get
online via a linksys router(BEFSR41). I can ping the
router and the other PC(win98) on the router but XP won't
pick up a valid DHCP IP from the router. When I attemped
to renew the adapters ip in the command prompt I recieved
the following error "an operation was attemped on
something that is not a socket"
