Trouble with Dell Optiplex GX280 keyboard failing unpredictably

One of my clients has a computer lab with nothing but Dell Optiplex
GX280s. These machines have no PS/2 connections, so keyboard and mouse
(they're using the ones provided by Dell) are both USB.

My client is reporting that randomly, on all of the workstations, when
the machines boot the keyboard will not respond on the Windows logon
screen. Apparently the mouse still functions, but the keyboard does
not. She'll then need to manually reset the computer, and then
sometimes right away, sometimes after multiple tries, the keyboard
will finally work.

I've verified that the system has the latest BIOS version (A08, while
A06 specifically solved an issue with the keyboard and/or mouse
occasionally not responding), so that's not an available solution. All
Windows Updates have been applied, as well.

Has anyone had any experience with a problem such as this and know of
any solutions?

Try refreashing the USB Root Hub drivers.

Go to Start/Run, and type DEVMGMT.MSC , highlight the USB Root Hub
device(s), Action menu, "Uninstall", then restart Windows, to find the device
drivers again automatically.

Have you tried updating the "Dell Smart Card Reader Keyboard, Driver" ?
A newer version from Feb. 2007 is available on the Dell support site.

Make sure you get file R148501.EXE, and not the older one from 2004.

There's one other thing to check, go into the BIOS look for LEGACY or
DOS usb support and make sure it's enabled. Note some Dell systems do
not include this option in the BIOS as it is permanently enabled.

Andrew Leith.
