Trouble with a Fujitsu ScanSnap scanner.

I've got a Fujitsu '4110' ScanSnap scanner. It worked fine for a long time,
and then I bought a new Computer. I am using Windows XP. When the scanner
is running there is an image in the notification area of the screen. The
image starts off overlaid by an image with a red line through it. Until
ScanSnap finds the Paperport application the red line remains. As soon as
it does find it and a connection is made the red line disappears. Since I
got the new computer the red line doesn' t go away. I've tried everything
including reinstalling Windows. Can somebody please tell me how to get
ScanSnap to find the software application . Alternatively can sombody tell
me how to talk with Customer Support at Fujitsu. I've gone to their web
site. But there is nothing there that would tell one how to contact
customer support.

Hi Don,

First, to answer your request for a phone number: if you're in the U.S,
the phone # is 800-626-4686 option 2. Or check out
http://www.fujitsu.com/global/ and click on the division of Fujitsu
closest to you.

The red line you're referring to is the ScanSnap Monitor. It's
essentially the drivers AND scanning application rolled into a windows
service installed with the ScanSnap CD. Remember, the ScanSnap is the
exception to the rest of the Fujitsu product line of scanners. This is
the only non-twain / non- ISIS scanner offered... The ScanSnap monitor
launches each time you boot windows and immediately looks for the
microcode/firmware on your scanner which provides the Product ID to
windows.

If the hardware is not properly detected, you'll see the anti-symbol
over the S! icon letting you know that the device is not ready to scan.

To isolate the problem: (make sure the scanner is on and connected to a
USB port directly on your pc- also disconnect any non-essential usb
devices till you've identified the problem with this scanner)

1.right click on My Computer

2. select Manage

3. on the left pane of Computer Management highlight Device Manager

4. look on the right pane and verify the scanner is listed as an
imaging device
(Fujitsu fi-4110EOX2) without a ? or ! icon

chances are likely that:
a. the scanner is listed as an unkown device or has a ? or ! icon
representing your scanner

b. the scanner is not seen at all, in which case start looking at
physical connectivity (USB cable- though rarely ever an issue with any
of the FJ scanners if you're using the provided 6' cable and connected
direct to your pc)

c. Hardware isn't properly initializing... (turning the scanner on with
only the power chord connected should result in the power led flashing
for a brief period and then eventually go solid when the lamps have
warmed up)

d. broken installation . the fi-4110 is the first ScanSnap scanner as
well as one of the first USB scanners by Fujitsu. Back then, it was
easy to corrupt an installation which often resulted in having to clean
up a couple keys in the registry since any attempts following a broken
install would always result in the same outcome...

*make sure with windows XP, that you're selecting defaults throughout
the found new hardware wizard including the message about didn't pass
windows logo testing... you have to click "continue anyway" for the
initial setup if you want to use that scanner with XP.

I'll keep this email short and hopefully get you on the right
track...if you still have problems, or any questions, feel free to call
me at 408-996-1829

hope this helps....
