Trouble reinstalling xp dell 2350

With XP Home when trying to reinstall the program appears to hang on the
"install devices" section. Although the information screen keeps changing and
the little buttons on the bottom right keep cycling through nothing appears to
happen. I have let it go for hours with no results. I have tried first
reinstalling to the existing windows folder, then to a new windows folder and
am now in the process of a reformat and resinstall. If anyone has any ideas
I'd be pleased to hear them. Thanks
