I had some problems with malware and eneded up deleting some vital
windows files I think.

On the desktop when i try to move the icons around the horizontal bars
indicating the positions of the placemednt has disappeared, for
instance

I was hoping to reinstall windows xp over the current installationas
to keep all the applications and files currently on my machine. Is
that possible? if so, how will I go about doing that?

I do not want to reformat. malware problem is been resolved. i just
need to restore some missing windows files except I do not know which.
(I have no restore points left because malware deleted them. it was
the latest antispyspider.us malware that went around this week. )

Thanks for any input.

Check your documentation. As you have a Dell machine it may have come with a
restore partition or restore disks, these may only permit you to restore to
the factory defaults which may delete all the data and software on the
machine.

If your machine came with a proper XP CD then the following will help :-

What ever you decide to do BACK UP YOUR DATA things some times do go wrong.

If I repair install will I lose all the service pack installations and
other updates?

Yes, unless the CD you use has been "slipstreamed" to the same patch level.

If you are using an ordinary OEM CD you should be able to create an
up-to-date CD with SP3 intergrated. The following links should be of
assistance. I have just used nLite to create a SP3 CD for the machines I
have to look after.

I installed sp3 but i do not have a copy of it. Is there a link from
which I can download it?

Also my understanding is that SP3 contains ALL the previous updates
and patches so that I don't have to install individual patches? Is
that true?
