trouble logging into Windows XP

When the welcome log in screen comes up, I click on "hp owner" it makes the
little sound and says it's getting my personal settings but then it
immediately logs out.
Can not get to my desk top at all.

The profile may be corrupt. If this is XP Home, restart in Safe Mode to
log into the Administrator account. Create a new account and verify that
that one works properly. If it does, migrate the files and settings from
the corrupted profile to the new one.

You may, or may not, be able to use System Restore to fix the existing
profile, but you may well have to do that from Safe Mode, again from the
Administrator account.
