trouble joining Domain - DNS suffix abracadabra

I just installed XP Pro over XP home and want to use this machine at the
office and join our domain.

When I try to make the machine a member of the domain, I get the 'A domain
controller for domain .... could not be contacted".

In the details section I'm told the error is that there are "no DNS servers
set up for local system".

I did create a machine with the name of the new machine on the PDC.

Any suggestions?

Are you using DHCP on your office network? If so, what DNS server IP is it
dishing out? Should be your internal one, not an Internet DNS server.

Yes, we are. But the machine can't find the DHCP server either. . So I
tried a fixed IP and set the preferred DNS server but still it can't find
those machines.

Sounds like you have a bad cable or port on a hub.
double check your connection into your network and don't use a static IP if
your network has a DHCP server.

Hi Gary,

I re-checked the cable and ports. Same problem. Besides, I the 'Local Area
Connnection Status ' looks just fine: connected.

The status lights on switch are also in the green...

I"ll put things back to 'obtain IP address and DNS server addresss' back to
automatic.

What else can we try...?

somehow, it all resolved itself. Didn't do anything; suddenly I could see
other computers on the network. Must be the Microsoft autorepair feature
.
