Trouble installing XP

J

Jim S.

When I install XP Pro, after the files are copied to the HDD, the machine
reboots and the installation starts all over again.

I have run tests on the HDD, RAM, motherboard and controller and all test
are OK.

This is driving me nuts! Has anyone seen this before?

If you are pressing a key to boot from CD each time, it will re-start.. the
only time that you press the key to boot from CD is the very first..
thereafter, ignore the on screen prompt..

After you complete the first part of the install, you will have to enter the
bios during the reboot and make sure that your boot order is as such:

1. Boot from hard drive
2. Boot from CD

Save your changes and exit.

If it's a SATA drive, try interrupting the normal install and install
your disk's SATA drivers.

Its an IDE drive.....

We used a Bart PE Cd to verify that the Windows files are being written to
the drive.....but no luck with the install starting from the HDD.

We also tried other HDDs that are new....same problem.

I think it may be the mobo.....anybody seen a mobo problem like that?

While you are in the BIOS setup, check to insure there is no bootsector
virus control running. Had that happen once before and it will stop a
Windows install dead in it's tracks.

I'll check that tomorrow. I was over at a friend's house....trying to
figure out this problem on his PC.

He's ready to buy a new motherboard and CPU. I hope he won't have to do
that.

Thanks for your help!

Check the BIOS. If it has a setting called "Rapid Boot" or similar try
disabling that.

I'm thinking it may be a problem with the motherboard and may replace it.

When the screen says that it's finished copying the installation files
and is getting ready to restart your computer take the cd out of the
drive. This will force your computer to boot from the hard drive when
it restarts. When the install program continues it will ask you to
insert the Windows cd again.

Tried that too. It didn't recognize the files on the HDD as bootable.

Might be worth taking the Windows setup CD out before the PC reboots to make
sure it is re-booting from your hard drive instead.
