Trouble installing Monitor drivers

I am trying to update my Monitor drivers, which I have tried to do 2 ways now

1)going to Display>Settings>Advanced>Monitor>Properties,
but the properties box is faded out/inactive so I can't open it to change
the drivers.

2)going through Device Manger. When I do this there is no icon for monitor
any where!!

Why does my computer not recognize that my monitor is there? It's as if it
doesn't exist. I can't change the refresh rate, update the drivers or
install the Display Settings software that came with the monitor.
Please help!

To change the refresh rate:
Go to Start/Run,and type 'dxdiag' "More help" Tab, then "Override" button.
