Trouble importing files into outlook from Cd

J

John

I recently changed laptops from a compaq to an IBM
thinkpad. i used Outlook express on my old laptop. My
inbox of e-mail was backed up onto a disc on my old
laptop. i am now trying to import these e-mail files onto
my new laptop using Outlook 2003. the files were saved on
the disc as DBX files, (ie. inbox.dbx), the import tool on
Outlook 2003 only gives an option to import .pst files?
any suggestions??

Outlook can't import dbx files stand-alone. Ther collection of the DBX files
plus a few others make up your OE mailbox. Unless you can install Outlook on
the old laptop and import everything from there to a PST first, give
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/
a good read to learn how to back-up OE on the old machine. You should be
able to transfer that to OE on the new lpatop, and then import into Outlook.

To Patrick Reed. thanks for the response. the problem
here is, i do not have the old laptop anymore. al i have
is the disc with the dbx files saved on to it? i tried
opeing the files without outlook and it tells me that it
is not a "win32" application? i also tried opeing the dbx
files using Outlook, File, Open, and it tells me that this
is not an Outlook data file, or access is denied and i do
not have permission required to access file? any other
suggestions?

unfortunately, no. You can try configuring OE on the new laptop and using
File | Import messages in OE to import that DBX file (you have to point to
the folder in which that DBX file was saved). I don't think you'll have any
luck, though.

Otherwise, you can try doing a search on www.google.com or www.dogpile.com
for a third-party tool that may be able to help you out. I search for
"outlook express dbx import" and came up with quite a few hits. I've never
used an third-party app for OE, so I can't substantiate any claims these
sites make.

I would have said that was EXACTLY the way to do it - open OE (which comes
with every flavour of Windows since 98), import the dbx files, and then
export to Outlook.

Can I be an MVP now please?

I would, too, but the mailbox consists of much more than just the one Inbox
DBX file. OE needs the rest of the files to be able to find and access the
data it needs to do an import. If that's the only file he has, it's doubtful
OE will be able to do anything with it.

Presuming you backed up the *whole* OE store folder from your old computer:

Copy the OE folder on your CD to your hard drive and remove the read-only
attributes. Set up an account in Outlook Express on this computer, and then
go to tools, options, maintenance, store folder (this is for OE6) and point
OE to the folder you copied from CD. Can you then see everything therein? If
so, you can then export to Outlook, once you've set up a profile in Outlook.

Your address book may not be recoverable as it was a .wab file on your old
laptop, not part of the OE DBX files.
