Trouble Deleting files

P

Paul

Here is the whole story. I wanted to clean up some of the
larger files on my harddrive, the ones I am talking about
are in my 'My Shared Folder'. They are all approximately
100 meg or more. They all have a .exe extension but are
really either .iso or .bin files, and even the tiny .cue
files associated with the .bin files. When I try to
rename them in order to burn them or when I try to delete
them to clean up space, I get a sharing violation and
neither action is possible. I copied one of them to
another harddrive, and the sharing violation followed it.
Other files outside of this folder do not have this
problem. I have run chkdsk, and run current antivirus
definitions and nothing seems to be amiss. Another user
suggested safe mode, didn't work. He also suggested
wholockme.exe, this program when run told me the files do
not exist. His other suggestion was out of the W2K
resource kit, oh.exe, and that did not help either. Any
suggestions?

Try deleting them from the recovery console. First you'll need to Control
Panel|Admin Tools|Local Security Policy Recovery console:"Allow floppy copy
and access to all drives/folders" set to enabled

To start the Recovery Console, start the computer from the Windows 2000
Setup CD or the Windows 2000 Setup floppy disks. If you do not have Setup
floppy disks and your computer cannot start from the Windows 2000 Setup CD,
use another Windows 2000-based computer to create the Setup floppy disks.
Press ENTER at the "Setup Notification" screen. Press R to repair a Windows
2000 installation, and then press C to use the Recovery Console. The
Recovery Console then prompts you for the administrator password. If you do
not have the correct password, Recovery Console does not allow access to the
computer. If an incorrect password is entered three times, the Recovery
Console quits and restarts the computer. Once the password has been
validated, you have full access to the Recovery Console, but limited access
to the hard disk. You can only access the following folders on your
computer: %systemroot% and %windir%

Then from the recovery console command line;
SET allowallpaths = TRUE

to gain access to all folders and try deleting from here.

Never tried Dave's advice and it seems reasonable enough. Have you tried rebooting and still have the same trouble? If so that's one reason why I have a dual boot system. When I cannot delete a file in one op sys I go into the other op sys and deltete those files easily.

It sounds to me like you're infested with some kind of worm or trojan.
Try installing and running AdAware to see what it turns up.

Where did this "My Shared Folder" come from? It doesn't sound like a
standard Windows folder.
