can't delete file

a program I downloaded for free trial before buying created a large
application file (227Mb .tif file) that I can't delete - each time I try, I
get a message asking if I'm sure I want to move to the recycle bin, and when
I say yes, I get a message saying there is a sharing violation message, after
which my system goes into intenese disk acess for several minutes

how can I delete this file

Try deleting it when booting into Safe Mode.

Hi jhnptbrg - From my Blog, Defending Your Machine, addy below in my
Signature:

"Sometimes the tools below will find files which they are unable to delete
because they are in use.

A program called Copylock, here, http://noeld.com/programs.asp?cat=misc can
aid in the process of "replacing, moving, renaming or deleting one or many
files which are currently in use (e.g. system files like comctl32.dll, or
virus/trojan files.)"

Another is Killbox by Option Explicit, Beta version available here:
http://www.killbox.net/downloads/beta/KillBox.exe Overview directions are
available here: http://www.killbox.net/help.html#Top Read carefully - this
tool is quite powerful.

A third which is a bit different but often very useful is Delete Invalid
File, here: http://www.purgeie.com/delinv.htm which handles invalid/UNC
file/folder name deleting, rather than the in use problem.

A fourth useful program is Unlocker, here:
..http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/ " Simply right click the folder or file
and select Unlocker. If the folder or file is locked, a window listing of
lockers will appear. Simply select the lockers and click Unlock and you are
done!" Works as advertised and is particularly helpful in identifying
malware components which are 'protecting' each other."

While attempting to copy a large group of files from a data drive to
an external drive (USB), I came across 26 that would not copy.
Several different errors were reported that did not make sense:
filename invalid, duplicate filename. Displayed filenames are OK and
no duplicates were found. Upon trying to obtain file parmaters, an
error message was returned: The properties for this item are not
available. Upon trying to delete, the server issues a beep and
nothing else happens. Upon trying to rename, the server issues a beep
and nothing else happens. When trying to open the files (they are
either .doc or .pdf), they won't open. I ran chkdsk (without the /f)
to see if chkdsk found any errors. None were reported. I restored
one of the files involved from a recent backup to a temporary folder.
The restore process completed and the file is shown in the temporary
location. However, the file won't open, can't get properties, can't
delete, and can't rename - just like the file on the drive from which
is was backuped from.

Will either of the utilities mentioned allow repairing or deleting the
files described above? Thanks!

Try "Delete Doctor", a free program at this URL:
http://www.diskcleaners.com/ Has worked well for me on several
occasions.

Try running chkdsk /r on the drive to see if there are any bad clusters.
What are the permissions (Security) for the filename you copied. Do you
have all access?

Thanks for the replys. I will be at the client tomorrow and can try
the suggested delete utility. I did try the chkdsk /r remotely and it
did not return any errors.

I just tried using Delete Doctor, as suggested. When attempting to
navigate to the file via the applet's Browse or dragging the file into
the applet, the file to be deleted will not appear in the applet's
file to be deleted edit box.

Any other suggestions? A very perplexing situation. Thanks.

Thanks, Jim. I went to the site for delinv.exe and read that some can
be deleted from the DOS prompt. I tried the file I recovered to a
temporary folder and it worked. I now have 26 others to try deleting
(or renaming) using DOS. I don't see why it won't work on those files
as they act the same why when I tried to delete them via Windows
Explorer. Thanks, again, and Merry Christmas!
