trouble connecting to domain

I am attempting to resolve an issue with a Dell Inspiron
5100 laptop. Basically, I'm having trouble getting it
connected to the domain.
I continually get the following message when attempting
to get this machine to join the domain: "A domain
controller for the domain (domain_name) could not be
contacted. Ensure that the domain name is typed
correctly. If the name is correct, click Details for
troubleshooting information." However, the details
indicate the DNS was successfully queried for the service
location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain
controller for my domain. It even returns an accurate
list of the domain controllers that it was able to
identify.
I am certain the domain I'm using is correct, but I've
tried every possible combination I can think of for
the "Domain" and "Primary DNS suffix" section in an
attempt to get it to join the domain and nothing works.
I've checked to ensure my settings are the same as other
XP Pro (desktops) workstations as well.
The servers on my network allow me to automatically
obtain the IP Address and DNS information, so that
shouldn't be an issue. I am able to ping servers and
other machines (including my own machine) without any
trouble. I can even get this computer to appear on the
network if I make it join a Workgroup using the same name
as the domain. Obviously, I can't communicate with it
across the network like that, but it does show up in the
list of computers on the network.
I can't figure out what could be preventing this
machine from joining the domain or how to resolve the
issue. If you have any ideas, PLEASE let me know. Thank
you!!!

I can't get the computer to join the domain at all, so how
can I remove and re-join it? Maybe I'm not understanding
your suggestion...

Edgar,
Thank you for the reply. I do not have multiple
domains. I attempted to have it join a domain with the
same name as my computer as you suggested, but was unable
to do so (Error: The new computer name may not be the
same as the domain name.)(no, I wasn't attempting to
change the name, but just the domain by going through "My
computer"/properties/Computer Name tab/CHANGE). Any
other ideas?

Thanks again,
Jenny

Jenny, if you've got multiple domains choose a different
domain or just the computer name for domain. This should
allow you to access the computer with proper
cridentials. Once you're successful at login; remove
youself from the domain, then add yourself back into it.
This should work, if not.... unplug the ethernet cable
from the computer then see if the cache login will allow
you to login to your computer.
