Trouble: 360 w/ Vista

Here's my deal: I have worked with the Media Center Extender with XPMC. Now I
am trying with Vista RC1. Not connecting to save my life. I have turned off
Windows Firewall completely and nothing else is installed on the computer.
Someone suggested updating the 360 (which has been an ordeal in itself since
I hate Xbox Live's commercialism) and that was an equal dead end. I consider
myself and the team I work with to be highly educated when it comes to
personal computing and entertainment, but we are only as smart as the books
we read and there is nothing out there to help us troubleshoot. I am hoping
there is someone out there even smarter than we who has this same problem or
can visualize it, (because it's likely that a smarter person had no trouble
whatsoever with this setup at all). So once again: Xbox360, Vista Ultimate
RC1, no firewalls, Windows Defender on but not active scanning (I don't know
how to stop it entirely), Xbox360 can view movies, photos, music on computer
but cannot view Media Center. Help.

Why kill yourself with RC1? Seems like a lot of wasted time. RTM is
available and will be retail in a few days.

That is not an option. It was my first thought, but not an option. If it is
truly impossible for MCE to work with RC1, then I'll have to suck it up and
wait for our copy to arrive via the $12 upgrade option from Utah. But I would
rather fix this issue with RC1 and get the feel for it before our customers
are panting for Vista.

GBM,

It might be difficult for believing, there has been many IT Pros simply
defeated by attempting installing Windows Vista the *old* fashion method;
treating Vista as if Vista is an ancient quick and rapid PnP installation.

When Installing Vista, respectfully, one can not rapidly insert Vista’s DVD
inside the optical drive, and then wish and hope for the best outcome…

With Vista one has to Install Windows Vista slowly, fully reading *all*
Setup and Install instructions, including Vista’s Help and Support Files,
and, including using the incredible “Start Search†Feature located
immediately above Vista’s Start Button.

Seriously, using the “Start Search†Feature; just begin typing your request
and rapidly Vista responds with your request as a Magic Genie.

From the events you shared, near certain that you will require performing a
proper fresh clean install will all devices, including broadband connected to
your computer before ever first inserting Vista’s DVD.

Additionally, strongly would recommend formatting the HDD with (the first
partition) at least 1.5 Gig Partition for using the incredible benefits
provided by BitLocker.

Go slowly and then you will experience our worlds most state-of-the-art OS,
Vista, that is equal with piloting a Stealth Fighter Jet.

Visit the below URL for information regarding BitLocker, at that URL you can
Search Microsoft for locating the Step by Step Guide for Installing Vista.

If Vista was like flying a stealth bomber, I'd have to call in a Broken
Arrow. I would hope that Microsoft has not made a product that is so
'unuserfriendly' as a stealth bomber. It should as easy as riding a bike...
which I truly think it is. However, I know I am missing a step or the plain
and simple fact is that RC1 out of the box does not work with an Xbox360
right out of the box. Please, don't answer this thread unless you have
something we can work with.

GBM,

Sincerely and genuinely, will you accept my apology, please?

This Post will be my last Post for this Thread.

Very reluctant for responding to your last Post, the syntax within your
Post, in my view, result from a very intelligent man, and possibly, a very
frustrated man.

Obviously, I did not fully comprehend your request for assistance.

Instead, my Post was secondary primarily to one sentence from your Post:
“we are only as smart as the books we read and there is nothing out there to
help us troubleshoot.†Also, your statement as appeared within your Post
read, “but cannot view Media Center. Help†apparently; I over-looked the
period between “Center. Help†again adding to my confusion or wrong
interpretation of your Post.

Not positive but near certain, the Media Center for RC1 Beta has time
expired… have you tried viewing a DVD from RC1 Media Center?

Have used Windows Vista (several Versions and machines) for very near
two-years, my first experience using Microsoft Windows was using Microsoft
Windows DOS that required using the large floppy for first loading DOS before
loading other applications.

My suggestion for using the “Start Search†and Microsoft’s online KB
Articles is an experience learned the hard method, specifically for obtaining
-accurate reliable technical information- from the Experts employed by
Microsoft. *All the folks within this Forum are volunteers, not employees of
Microsoft, with extremely very rare exceptions.

Respectfully,

I don't know how these Media Centre Extenders actually operate, as I have
never used it, but I do know that the MC codecs on RC1 expired a few weeks
ago (something about saving money on licencing). This might be your issue.

So not actually smart at all but merely able to regurgitate information
spoon fed to you.

Turn on Xbox 360. On Vista PC go to Control Panel, Network and Sharing.
Click on the dropdown arrow next to Media Sharing and the Change
Button. On the next window, make sure "Share my media to" is checked
and Xbox360 appears in the list below.

You are brilliant... Here I was looking for a fix to this and it was as
simple as entering the control panel and adding the device to shared
permissions list.

Oh wait... I've done that. In fact, that was the second thing we've tried
(not counting pressing the big, shiny button that says 'Power'). I appreciate
the comment that we are not smart here but all we do is regurgitate... that's
real constructive. I wonder if you treat everyone that same way.

'Dad! I learned 2 + 2 = 4 today in math!'

'You're an idiot, boy. Now I want to you work on mathematical theory which
proves 4 is incorrect.'

Seriously, I feel for anyone who knows you. I am suprise you didn't tell me
to make sure cables were connected or the computer was even turned on. Ten
points... really. In the meantime, I called Xbox support (and finally got in
touch with a lead tech) who eventually said that vista media center and 360
are incompatible at RC1 and suggested to get the final release. So I have to
bite the bullet after all and pick up a final copy of Vista with the big
unknown still out there.

I'll close this thread saying I appreciate all the feedback (positive or
not). And that if the Vista Ready user is still reading, to please not go
into lawyer mode in a forum. It's great for when you are in the courtroom
(you can hide lies better in long, complicated sentence structure) but for a
tech-chat forum, the simpler the text, the better.

Goodnight all and thanks again... if nothing else, then just for the laughs.
