Does anyone know if it is possible to transfer e-mail messages from outlook
express in win98 to Vista?

yes.
create a folder on the Vista machine such as C:\Old Mail

copy ALL the dbx files from the W9x box to the C:\Old Mail folder.
Make sure you copy ALL of them, especially the Folders.dbx file.

File | Import | Messages then select Microsoft Outlook Express 6 (even if it
was version 5 on the 9x box).

Import from an OE6 store directory
press Next then Browse to the C:\Old Mail folder
Select it then OK button then finish up the import.

Highlight all of the dbx files and make sure Read Only is not checked.

Thanks folks. I had tried something similar to this method, but never got it
exactly right. I appreciate your help.

A little more help please... I have tried to do everything you said and it
still doesn't work. When I hit the Browse button, it puts in the wrong
path... like this. I created the folder E:\Old Mail. When I hit Browse, it
puts in E:\Old Mail\Old Mail. I can't change it in any way. Any more
suggestions?

When you select E:\oldmail, don't double-click it to open it...
If you try to open \oldmail, then you get the \oldmail\oldmail

From http://www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx
(NOTE: Vista can put the wrong path in here sometimes, so instead of
c:\mypath it puts c:\mypath\mypath, so check the path to verify that it is
correct, and if it is not correct then fix it by clicking the Browse button
a second time and then leave the selection blank and clicking Okay.).

That's a bug. Type in the correct location.

Maybe they'll fix it next year.

Leaving the Browse box blank worked. Who would have ever thought of doing
that?.. not me. Thanks for saving my 50+ e-mail folders.
