Trimming Clips Quality

Is there a difference in quality with trimming a captured dv-avi video clip
in the timeline vs. the contents pane? Also, I was surprised by the level
of quality drop when applying zoom-in and slow-mo effects.

No, there won't be a difference in the movies rendered from them.

If you're looking at the quality drop by looking at the movie preview on the
timeline, it's a low quality rough draft mode and not the quality of your
rendered final movie...
